The Rise of Anxiety A Scientific Perspective

Why has anxiety increased over the past 10 years?

Anxiety is a complex emotion that can be triggered by various factors such as stress, fear, and uncertainty. It is a feeling that many of us experience at some point in our lives, but in recent years, it seems to have become more prevalent. The question is, why?

In the past decade, there has been a noticeable increase in the number of people opening up about their struggles with anxiety. From celebrities to friends and family members, more and more people are speaking out about their experiences. But is this increase in awareness simply due to people being more open about their mental health or is there something else at play?

Studies on anxiety prevalence show that there has indeed been a rise in anxiety levels. However, when we delve deeper into the data, the picture becomes less clear. While it may seem like everyone around us is experiencing anxiety, there are other factors at play that could be contributing to this trend.

The Impact of Covid-19

The ongoing Covid-19 pandemic has undoubtedly had a significant impact on our mental health. With lockdowns and restrictions imposed worldwide, uncertainty and fear have become part of our daily lives. The World Health Organization reported a 25.6% increase in anxiety disorders in 2020 as people grappled with an unknown virus and its effects on their lives.

However, studies have shown that this rise in anxiety levels did not persist as the pandemic continued. In fact, levels began to decrease as people adapted to the new normal. This could be due to the fact that humans are resilient creatures who can adapt to challenging situations over time.
