Is the Mac camera light on? Here’s how to fix it!

Most of the time, camera problems are software-related, and the best way to tackle that is to make sure you clear any malware or optimize settings.

Having the camera light on can feel intrusive, and it might also signal there are some issues with your Mac. But you don’t have to rush, instead you have to figure out what leads to those problems and how you can fix them. Thankfully, narrowing down on the issue and figuring out a solution is not very difficult. There are some methods you can use to fix the “camera light always on” issue, and here are the top examples to solve that!

Check for malware

You can use a Mac cleanup tool or an antivirus to see if you have any malware. Sometimes, if camera light is on, that might be a sign that you are dealing with some sort of malware. These tools are great because they can identify and remove any type of malware on your computer. And, if the camera issue was caused by malware, the camera will turn off. Plus, malware is very bad for your device in general, so removing it properly can make a huge difference and save you time anyway.

Restart the camera service

You can open your Terminal and use this command “sudo killall VDCAssistant; sudo killall AppleCameraAssistant”. What it does is it stops the camera process and restarts it. Most of the time, this should help solve the camera problem. Unless, of course, the issue is caused by something else.

Adding a sticker onto the camera is not an option

Some people just place a sticker onto the camera and remove it when they need to use the camera. That’s not a fix, it’s just a temporary solution. So you shouldn’t do that. A sticker is not going to fix anything. It will only lead to damage because the display will not touch the Mac the way it was intended.

Control the apps that have camera access

You can enter the Privacy and Security settings in the System Settings. Enter Privacy and here you want to locate the Camera. And then you want to check what apps have access to the camera. Go through that list and then you want to see what apps are using the camera. Sometimes, those apps can be running in the background and that’s why the camera is on. You want to stop those, because some of the apps can have malware and your data might be sent to other places. So, you need to take control and stop those apps that shouldn’t have control in the first place.
